The Confirmation Preparation Program includes the following.

  • Youth must be active participants in the Religious Education classes offered by SGFP either in religion class at the schools (CJ Middle School, St. Christopher, St. Peter), in the Youth Ministry 8th Grade Faith Formation Sessions or in faith formation through homeschool.
  • Sacramental Coordinator will guest teach in each school and at the YM Faith Formation program for four sessions that introduce direct preparation for the Sacrament. Students receiving faith formation through homeschool should attend the 4 direct preparation sessions with the Youth Ministry 8th Grade Faith Formation to prepare with the parish community. Dates will be provided to registered youth.
  • Classes are derived from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops teachings. Topics are Sacraments (specifically the Sacraments of Initiation), grace, the Holy Spirit, and what it means to be a Christian witness.
  • Attendance at a retreat provided by St. Gabriel the Archangel Family of Parishes.
  • Attendance at a rehearsal for the Sacramental Mass. The sponsor is also asked to attend the rehearsal. If the sponsor cannot attend, a parent should take his/her place.
  • Candidates must have a sponsor, a spiritual companion, to stand up with him or her at the Confirmation Mass.
  • A sponsor must be a Confirmed practicing Catholic, in conformity with the norms, laws and principals of the Roman Catholic Church, at least 16 years old and not the candidate’s parent (Canon law 874).
  • Candidates must choose a confirmation name, which the Bishop will use at the anointing with Chrism.
  • One can choose their baptismal name (their first name) to show the connection between Baptism and Confirmation.

One may choose the name of a Saint or loved one with whom he or she connects, is inspired by and is a go-to intercessor.
